TYPES OF INTEGRATIONS

There are three main types of integrations; Out-of-the-box, Custom API Built In-House, and iPaaS. Just like there are multiple ways to make a lasagna for dinner. All generally have the same elements; cheese, meat, marinara sauce, and pasta. Just like all integrations are composed of workflow recipes, triggers, actions, and lines of code. 

OUT-OF-THE-BOX INTEGRATIONS

Out of the box integrations are comparable to your prepackaged, frozen lasagna. Preheat your oven, pop it in, and wait. If you’re craving lasagna, it’ll satisfy, for a while. Out of the box integrations are focused on specific software with predefined workflows, basic functionality, and little-to-no customization, but they’re a good introduction.

CUSTOM IN-HOUSE INTEGRATIONS

Then maintenance of the integration will inevitably take even more time. Developers have to relearn the backend code every time an update is released, changing the functionality of the APIs. These are the lasagnas with the homemade pasta sheets that take 8 hours to make, roll out, and dry, and the marinara sauce that can’t even be made until the tomatoes have ripened on the vine. Unless you’d rather hire Gordon Ramsey to come make this one lasagna for you, in which case, please invite me.  
But in the days before grocery stores (or without a Gordon Ramsey-sized budget) there aren’t a lot of other options to have lasagna for dinner.

Even before launch and implementation, in-house integrations require expensive, dedicated, internal resources for upwards of six to eight months. This time is spent away from revenue-generating duties to learn the unique intricacies of all to-be-integrated platform-specific APIs.
